South Korea

-in South Korea gifted and talented children need special attention.

-there exist high schools for foreign languages, science, athletics, and the arts.

-with support of the government, these schools are encouraged to identify gifted students at an early age and to develop their potential.

-in the mid 1990's the Education Laws were amended to promote education for the gifted along with encouraging grade advancement and better programs in regular schools.

-in the mid 1990's, roughly 10% of elementary schools, 15% of middle schools, and 10% of high schools offered special classes for the gifted in science, Korean language, math, arts, foreign languages, and computer sciences.

-the government provides special incentives to gifted students to encourage them to stay in the country and not move abroad once they graduate.

-the government recognized the need to provide the materials and school environment necessary so that gifted children will excel and live up to their potential.
