Shyness
As with other children, shyness may be an issue for some gifted children.
Sometimes the gifted child's sensitivity or being introverted is mistakenly assumed to be because they are timid.
Just because a child needs time to warm up in a social situation doesn't mean they are overly shy.
Parents know what their child is like. Let the teacher know that your child isn't really timid, but needs time to get used to different situations.
If this is an issue for your child, let the teacher know this as well.
If it is determined that their temperament is negatively effecting them in school, with friends and at home, then more action may be needed.
If your child is timid, try to involve them in extracurricular activities.
This gives them an opportunity to meet other children while doing something they enjoy.
Talk to your child about their feelings. What might be the causes of these feelings? Are they being bothered at school?
Do they try to hide their abilities by not answering questions in class? These type of questions may give you some insight as to what is going on.
