Self-esteem

Self-esteem is often related to school achievement for gifted children. They want to do well. When they do as well as they expect, they feel good about themselves. When they don't, they feel less sure of themselves and their abilities.

A child sees himself through those closest to him, generally his parents. They get their feelings of self-confidence from the praise they receive. They are praised for doing something and begin to believe that they are good at it.

They are praised for their first step, first word and their recognition of colors. Their drawings are put on the fridge and admired. When this happens they begin to feel good about themselves. They feel like they can do so much and are confident and capable.

Once they start school, they have peers and teachers to add to the way they see themselves. If teachers give praise and treat children fairly, this reflects on the child's self-concept.

Teachers play a significant role in the life of the gifted child. Gifted children still need praise and support from teachers. Even though they learn quicker and work faster, they still need to be told that they did a good job and their effort was recognized.

How a child feels about himself affects the way he reacts to many situations and people he faces. Those who are confident and assured face situations with a positive outlook and do better.

If a child makes friends easily and fits in with the group his self-esteem, or the way he sees himself, is boosted. If a child doesn't fit in or always questions his abilities, or worries that he'll be laughed at, it is much harder to do well.

Those that lack positive self-esteem may not raise their hand to answer questions in class. They may stay apart from the group and feel self-conscious.

Positive self-esteem is essential for every child. Parents and teachers play a vital role in the life of a child and therefore they have a great influence on them. Gifted children need praise and recognition just like other children. This will go a long way in helping them succeed and feel good about themselves.
