Self-directed Learning

Self-directed learning is a perfect fit for the gifted child who is homeschooled.

Gifted children prefer to work on things that they find interesting. They also want to do things in their own way.

They enjoy discovering new things and solving problems that are challenging.

Gifted children do not like repetition, they prefer learning and moving on to the next topic.

This independent learning allows children to determine their interests and allows them to investigate their passions.

Homeschooling gives them this freedom. Parents are able to act as guide and give suggestions.

The possibilities for discovery and learning are open to anything their imagination can come up with.

Journaling is an excellent way to keep track of what they are doing and it gives parents insight into the gifted child’s thoughts and feelings.

They can spend more time exploring their chosen topic or area of study.

Gifted children have definite ideas and opinions. They often have several hobbies on the go.

Parents need only suggest resources and watch as these children are able to direct their own learning.

They can do this in a stress free environment, taking the time they need.

This type of learning allows children to recognize their role in learning and encourages them to participate fully.

They can also help establish the way the learning will be done, what the objectives are, and how to determine success.
