Career Choice

Children's ideas about career choice and what they want to do when they grow up comes from different factors.

These include things such as what their parents do for a living, where they live, their parent's attitude towards school, their parent's view about their own chosen career path and their socioeconomic situation.

Gifted children often have the capacity to do many things well. Sometimes, this serves to overwhelm or confuse them.

A good idea for parents is to accentuate their uniqueness and help them to decide on a career they want without pressure and little intervention.

Since gifted children have high ability in many areas, they are likely to change professions during their lifetime.

Ideally, children should not be pressured into choosing their profession at a young age. They need time to make informed decisions and to investigate what options are available to them.

Decisions about which courses to take and which schools to attend is really one of the first steps to choosing a career path.

Those students who love math, for example, will probably lean towards courses and schools geared to science, engineering, medicine and others.

Gifted teenagers can undergo a lot of stress trying to decide who they really are and what they want from life.

Also, the idea of having to leave home and set out on their own can add to their stress.

Ultimately, the choices they make about their future occupation has to have meaning and purpose and be fulfilling to them.
