Canada
Each of Canada's ten provinces and its territories are responsible for their own education system.
Each has its own minister responsible for determining the rules and regulations of its system.
The current trend is to include gifted children in the regular classroom.
There is a need for more specified teacher training in the area of gifted education.
The province of Alberta has its own Center for Gifted Education at the university of Calgary. The university provides training for teachers at the graduate level that specializes in gifted education.
The Center works in partnership with other centers around the world in an effort to develop teacher training, carry out research in gifted education and much more.
In Ontario, the Association for Bright Children, which was established 20 years ago, and is a strong voice insisting on better services and education for gifted children.
Other provinces like New Brunswick, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Nova Scotia, recognize and support the need for the development of some sort of curriculum for gifted students.
A lot has been achieved, because parents were not afraid to speak up and insist law makers do what is necessary to recognize and support the needs of gifted students.
However, there is more that needs to be done. Some teachers and school boards and districts still hold onto the idea that gifted children do not need anything extra and are able to go it alone. This attitude only serves to hurt the gifted student.
