Gifted Boys

Gifted boys deal with many of the same issues as gifted girls do. There may be social situations which make them feel awkward.

For example, if he isn't very sporty and doesn't enjoy playing sports, he may be the last to be chosen for the team at school.

This could make him feel isolated or different. It may be difficult for a him to find friends that enjoy the same things as he does. Generally, they will pick older friends for this very reason.

They tend to drop out of high school at higher rates then gifted girls. It may be that they are bored or that they want to fit in with their peers but don't feel they do.

They often seem less likely to talk about their feelings and prefer to remove themselves from the situation they are facing.

Our society still expects them to be more independent and responsible and discourages them from choosing careers in fields that are considered more for girls.

The essential thing is have open lines of communication with them. Let them know that you are always available to listen and not judge.
