Baking
It's summer. How often have you heard the words "I'm bored" from your child already? I'll answer this one. Dozens.
I look forward to summer vacation to spend time with my daughter and do things together. Hearing "I'm bored" on a regular basis is not one of them.
One of the things she enjoys is baking. I mentioned that I wanted to write about how much she enjoys it. She recommended that I interview her. I thought it was a great idea. Here are some of the questions I asked, and the answers she gave.
Q: What's your favourite thing to make?
A: I like to make cookies the best because they're fun to make. They always turn out well and I like to eat the cookie dough. I make them so often; I know the recipe by heart. My favourite ones to make and eat are chocolate chip cookies and peanut butter cookies.
Q: How old were you when you started?
A: I was in grade one, so around 6 years old. When I was younger I would pretend to cook with plastic food.
One time, I was pretending to bake something so I put it in a plastic container in the oven without turning the oven on. When my mom turned on the oven to make supper the container set on fire and melted.
Q: Why do you like it?
A: I like it because its fun to see something you did or made turn out really well and everybody likes it.
That makes me feel good. It's also fun because you gather all the ingredients together, measure everything and it turns out to be good.
Q: Any tips for other kids who might want to try it?
A: If you make a mistake, it doesn't matter, just try again. It's important to measure accurately to make sure it works right. Most recipes have tips at the bottom of the page telling you different things you might not know about what you're baking. Read them because they might help you with something you didn't know. Most of all, have fun!
