The Montessori Method

The Montessori Method was designed by Italian educator Maria Montessori around the early part of the 20th century.

It is used mostly in preschool and elementary school settings, though some high schools exist.

An overview:

-emphasis on learning via 5 senses

-learn at own pace, and own level

-learn on their own with teacher as guide

-learn through discovery

-children are placed in age groups, for example (3-6, 6-9, 9-12)

-older children are encouraged to share with younger ones

Since anyone can really use the Montessori name, it's a good idea to check out the school completely before making any decisions.

As with any school, ask how the teachers are trained. Visit the school, see it in action, ask questions.
