Not Every Child is Gifted

I read another article that has got me feeling the need to sit down and vent.

This article is written by someone who feels that too many children are being called gifted.

He writes how so many parents are looking for that TAG. Which of course is an acronym for Talented and Gifted.

Everybody's kid is gifted, he seems to feel. Granted, I don't know what is required in every district or board to have your child deemed gifted.

However, for us, it required a psychologist do a psycho-educational assessment. She determined that my daughter was gifted and should be accelerated.

Some make it sound like it's as simply as walking into the principal's office and demanding that their child be known as gifted from here on out.

It just doesn't happen that way! Even after the psychologist recommended acceleration for my daughter, the school board had to talk about it, consider the best course of action etc..

I wish that people would gather their facts and read about these incredible kids. It's not always easy for them in public schools. Not every child is gifted, but those that are need to be challenged and helped too.

Gifted Classes

I was at google this morning reading the news, as I often do. I typed in the words gifted children because, as you may have guessed, I have a special interest in gifted kids.

I read an article that dealt with a school board deciding to have a special class for gifted kids. I think this is great because, as I have written before, gifted kids can't make it on their own.

What didn't surprise me, but sort of got my feathers in a bunch, was the fact that some parents were opposed to the whole idea of special classes for gifted children.
These same parents however, are not opposed to special classes for their kids who have learning disabilities.

Now don't get me wrong, I firmly believe that we need to do as much as we can to help kids with special needs and learning disabilities.

Why? Because it is necessary. As a society we need to help all our children as much as possible.

Why are school boards and districts not doing more? Simple. It all has to do with money. The bottom line.

It's very frustrating when I read things like... we don't want to create a two tier system. Really? Hasn't that already been done in most public schools with special education teachers, classroom attendants, etc. That's all great until it comes to helping the gifted child. Then some parents get upset.

These separate or special classes for gifted kids should be in addition to those classes that exist for special needs kids. Why do we need to abolish one to create the other?

The problem is that many parents are afraid to rock the boat. But you really can't be when you are looking out for the best interest of your child. Say what you need to say. Ask questions, be insistent.

All the while being polite and respectful. It is work, sometimes frustrating, sometimes without the result you want.

But you get back up, and try again. Remember who you are fighting for! Your child!
